Kioni

Kioni is a deeply indented, circular, and well-sheltered natural bay and harbor located on the northeastern coast of Ithaca. Technically, it stands as one of the safest havens in the Ionian Sea, offering excellent protection against the prevailing northwesterly Maistros winds. The seabed is a mix of sand and seagrass; targeting the sandy patches ensures highly reliable holding. The standard practice here is to secure a stern-to berth at the small town quay (space is limited) or to drop anchor and take long lines to the ancient olive trees or rocks on the southern shore. Limited water and electricity are available on the quay. Navigators should watch out for shallow rocks near the three historic windmills at the southern entrance (3-6 meters).

Social life in Kioni beautifully embodies the elite, serene, and bohemian spirit of Ionian yachting. Due to limited road access, the harbor belongs almost exclusively to sailors and travelers seeking ultimate peace. The waterfront promenade and narrow stone alleys are lined with upscale fish tavernas, cozy ouzeris, and boutique cafes. The culinary highlights feature local extra virgin olive oils, fresh Ionian seafood, and the traditional local dessert "Rovani" (a unique honey and rice sweet). Dining by candlelight at the water's edge in the evening is the harbor's premier social ritual.

The primary activity in Kioni is swimming in its fairytale, mirror-like waters and exploring the striking pastel-colored neoclassical architecture lining the steep slopes. For hikers, the ultimate trail leads to the ruins of the three historic windmills standing proudly at the bay’s entrance, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Ionian Sea. On the water, exploring the pristine, hidden pebble beaches just north of Kioni—such as Filiatro and Plakoutsa—via tender for snorkeling is highly popular.

Kioni boasts a lush and rich Ionian landscape, backed by steep slopes covered in dense olive groves and pine trees that keep the air wonderfully scented. Culturally, the village showcases a beautiful architectural heritage heavily shaped by centuries of Venetian rule. Water and electricity services are limited on the town quay, but local shop owners and tavernas are incredibly welcoming to sailors. There are no major marina complexes inside the bay. Small mini-markets, local butchers, and excellent traditional bakeries easily supply a yacht's daily provisioning needs. Thanks to its current-free, shallow, and sheltered harbor structure, it stands as one of the most comfortable and relaxing stops in the Ionian for families.
