Logistics & Technical

Corfu is the nautical heart of the Ionian Sea regarding logistics and technical support. The premier yachting hub is Gouvia Marina, located just north of the main town, offering full water, electricity, fuel, a massive shipyard, and comprehensive technical/diver services. The historic Mandraki Harbor, set directly beneath the Old Fortress, acts as an exclusive yacht club and a primary port of entry for clearing customs. While the island's western coast is heavily exposed to the strong northwesterly Maistros winds, the eastern coast facing the mainland is well-sheltered. Petriti Bay in the south offers excellent anchoring on a sandy bottom. Navigators should expect busy ferry traffic and occasional heavy swells in the narrow channel separating Corfu from the mainland and Albania.

Gastronomy & Social Life

Corfu boasts the most aristocratic, neoclassical, and cosmopolitan social atmosphere in the Ionian. The UNESCO-listed old town alleys (Kantounia), the French-style Liston arcade, and Venetian squares are packed with upscale restaurants, luxury cafes, and vibrant bars. The culinary scene reflects a deep Venetian heritage; featuring signature dishes like "Sofrito" (garlic-wine beef), "Bourdeto" (spicy fish stew), "Pastitsada" (rich veal pasta), and local ginger ale (Tzitzibira). Social life is incredibly refined and elegant, ranging from high-end sailors' gatherings along the waterfronts to sophisticated coffee rituals at Liston.

Activities & Exploration

The most iconic activity is exploring the massive Old Fortress and New Fortress walls that guard Corfu Old Town, walking in the footsteps of medieval knights. Just south of the town, the grand Achilleion Palace—built by Empress Sisi of Austria—is a magnificent inland discovery point. For sailors, cruising to the breathtaking, fjord-like bays of Paleokastritsa on the northwest coast to snorkel in its calm, turquoise waters is a true sailing classic. Exploring the dramatic clay cliffs of the famous Canal d'Amour (Channel of Love) in Sidari via tender is also highly popular.

🍃 One with Nature

Culture & Nature

With over 4 million olive trees, dense pine forests, and dramatic cliffs, Corfu is one of the greenest and most geographically diverse islands in the Mediterranean—a stunning fusion of silver and emerald tones. Unlike the rest of Greece, Corfu never fell under Ottoman rule, remaining under Venetian, French, and British rule for centuries. This historical trajectory granted the island a purely Western European architectural and cultural identity. The neoclassical palaces, active philharmonic orchestras, and cricket fields are living proof of this unique synthesis.

Practical Info

Gouvia Marina is a world-class professional facility capable of handling all vessels up to mega-yachts; water, electricity, fuel, laundry, and technical shipyard services are provided flawlessly. Because the island is extensive and mountainous, renting a car from Gouvia or the town center is essential to tour the palaces and remote coastlines. Mega supermarkets, exceptional marine chandleries, and provisioning hubs sit right outside the marina gates. Its proximity to Corfu International Airport makes it the most practical main base in the region for crew changes and major logistics.

Personal Insight

Captain's Note

“
"Approaching Corfu and gliding between the two imposing fortresses of the old town is a magical moment that echoes the grand maritime history of the Adriatic and Ionian seas. Stay alert to the heavy wakes generated by mega-ferries arriving from Italy and the Greek mainland when docking at Mandraki or Gouvia. In the evening, after securing your yacht, enjoying a traditional Sofrito with a chilled glass of local wine beneath the Liston arcades is the ultimate refined reward this aristocratic island offers."
