Lakka

Lakka is a charming fishing village located in a horseshoe-shaped sheltered bay at the northern tip of Paxos island, and it is one of the most elegant stops in the Ionian Sea. An essential part of yacht charter and blue cruise itineraries, this harbor resembles a giant natural pool with its shallow and turquoise waters. Logistics & Technical

Lakka is a circular and wide natural bay, almost completely landlocked on the northern tip of Paxos. Technically, it stands as one of the safest anchorages in the Ionian Sea, remaining as calm as a lake against the prevailing northwesterly Maistros winds. The seabed is brilliant white sand, offering flawless holding. The standard practice is to drop anchor in the middle of the bay in $3-6$ meters of water and take long lines to the shore or olive trees. While the entrance seems wide, navigators must be extremely cautious of the shallow sandbars and reefs at the entry channel; always monitor the depth sounder.

Practical Info

There are no major marina facilities inside Lakka Bay; water and electricity are limited to a few spots on the quay or can be requested from local waterfront shops, while fuel is delivered via mini-tankers. The town features excellent bakeries, mini-markets, and local shops selling premium olive oil, meeting all daily provisioning needs. Thanks to its current-free, wave-free, and pool-like secure harbor structure, it is the most popular stop in the Ionian for families and casual cruisers.

Personal Insight

Captain's Note

“
"Approaching Lakka Bay from the sea, the intense neon-turquoise color of the water is mesmerizing. Inside, you will feel like you are in a tropical pool. When dropping anchor, ensure you target the clear sandy patches for a solid set. Keep in mind that the bay is highly popular during peak season, so plan to arrive early in the afternoon to secure a prime spot. Carefully track the shallow lines at the entrance on your charts."
