Mikro Chorio

Located on a hill in the interior of Tilos, Mikro Chorio is a fascinating "ghost village" abandoned in the 1950s when its residents moved to the port town of Livadia. For yacht charter guests, it is a mystical stop with its stone houses and deserted streets, essential to visit while staying at Livadia. On blue cruise itineraries, it is particularly popular for the iconic "Music Bar" that opens among the ruins during summer nights. Having a drink under the stars amidst the illuminated old church and crumbling buildings is a unique experience. In this spot dominated by history and silence, you can breathe in the ancient atmosphere and crown your day with fresh seafood at local tavernas on the Livadia waterfront.

Logistics & Technical

Mikro Chorio is an abandoned village located inland on the island of Tilos. For sailors, the primary technical base to access this area is the main harbor of Livadia. Livadia provides a safe quay and an anchorage area with a sandy bottom and good holding. The harbor offers good protection against the northerly Meltemi winds but can become uncomfortable with southerly and easterly swells. Once your yacht is secured at the Livadia quay or anchored in the bay, you must proceed by land. At night, a free shuttle bus operates from the harbor directly to the famous lounge bar in the ghost village.

Gastronomy & Social Life

There are no traditional restaurants in Mikro Chorio; the entire social scene revolves around a world-famous open-air Lounge Bar built amidst the ruins. Opening late at night, the bar illuminates the abandoned stone houses with colorful lights, creating a mystical atmosphere. The culinary side of Tilos is enjoyed back at Livadia harbor, famous for its slow-cooked local goat meat, fresh seafood, and wild herbs.

Culture & Nature

Mikro Chorio was abandoned after World War II due to water scarcity and economic reasons, as the population moved down to Livadia harbor. The nature is arid, characterized by wild shrubs and rocky hills typical of Tilos. Culturally, it is a fascinating example of how a melancholy ghost town can be artistically blended with modern nightlife.

Practical Info

There are no shops or facilities in Mikro Chorio (except the night bar). All provisions, water, and fuel must be secured at Livadia harbor. The most practical way to visit at night is to take the free shuttle bus provided by the bar, which departs from Livadia harbor square after 23:00. Tilos is generally a very safe and peaceful stop for sailors who love tranquility.
