Pakleni Islands

Stretching like a necklace just off the coast of Hvar, the Pakleni Islands are one of the most popular escapes in the Adriatic for blue cruise travelers. Standing out on yacht charter itineraries with their isolated bays covered in pine forests and clear turquoise waters, these islands offer a maritime holiday intertwined with nature. Sheltered harbors and natural beaches provide perfect anchorage opportunities for sailing enthusiasts. You can feel the island's energy at the chic beach clubs and local establishments along the shoreline and enjoy the sunset on your boat.

Logistics & Technical

The Pakleni Islands comprise a chain of about 20 islets offering a complex and rewarding navigation experience. The main hub is ACI Marina Palmižana on Sveti Klement Island, which is a near-perfect sanctuary providing total protection from the northerly Bora winds. When navigating between the islands, one must be extremely vigilant about numerous shoals and narrow passages. Outside the marina, Vinogradišće Bay is a prime anchorage with a sandy bottom, though it is exposed to southerly winds. Sea traffic is high, especially with taxi boats shuttling between the islands and Hvar town.

Gastronomy & Social Life

This is the heart of Adriatic "bohemian-chic." The islands, particularly around Palmižana, feature world-class restaurants hidden within lush, exotic gardens. Fresh lobster, slow-cooked Dalmatian specialties, and local Pošip wines are the stars. Social life ranges from high-energy beach clubs (like Carpe Diem Beach) during the day to sophisticated, candlelit dinners surrounded by the scent of pine needles at night.

Culture & Nature

The name "Pakleni" translates to "Hell Islands" in modern Croatian, but historically it stems from "paklina," the pine resin used for coating ship hulls. The nature is a stunning blend of emerald bays and dense Aleppo pine forests. The archipelago remains one of the most naturally beautiful and preserved parts of the Central Dalmatian islands.

Practical Info

ACI Marina Palmižana provides full services including water, electricity, and high-end sanitary facilities. For fuel, you must head to the nearby Hvar town quay or the island of Vis. Provisioning is available at the marina's small shop, though major shopping should be done in Hvar. It is a safe and exciting destination for families due to the shallow, calm coves.

Personal Insight

Captain's Note

“
"Anchor in Vinogradišće for a glorious swim during the day, but move to Palmižana if the weather looks uncertain. Waking up to the absolute stillness of the Pakleni archipelago while the rest of Hvar is still sleeping is a priceless experience."
