Logistics & Technical

Kobaš is a deeply indented, well-sheltered natural bay located on the southern coast of the Pelješac Peninsula, near the entrance of the Ston Channel. Technically, it stands as one of the safest havens in the Adriatic, offering flawless protection against almost all strong winds, including the notorious northeasterly Bora (Bura). The seabed is mostly mud and sand, providing excellent holding. The standard practice here is to utilize the modern wooden pontoons with laid moorings (lazy lines) provided by the waterfront gourmet restaurants. Water and electricity are available on these private jetties. Navigators must monitor their depth sounders closely to clear the shallows at the channel entrance ( 3-5 meters).

The most famous is Gastro Mare Kobaš (run by acclaimed Chef Ante Bjelančić) and Ribarska Kuća (Fisherman's House), long-time favorites for international sailors. The culinary highlights feature fresh Adriatic lobsters caught straight from the bay, world-famous Ston oysters, homemade pastas, and Pelješac’s premium red wines like Dingač. Activities & Exploration

The primary activity in Kobaš is swimming in its peaceful, mirror-like waters and exploring deep into the Ston Channel via tender. On land, relaxing hikes along trails winding through wild olive groves and pine forests are highly refreshing. The ultimate excursion is leaving your yacht at Kobaš and taking a short tender ride or taxi to the historic town of Ston to walk atop the Walls of Ston—the longest medieval defensive walls in Europe—and visit the ancient salt pans (Solana).

Culture & Nature

Kobaš showcases the purest form of the Pelješac Peninsula's steep, rocky, and lush Mediterranean landscape, surrounded by centuries-old olive groves and dense pine forests. Culturally, the area is heavily tied to the historic oyster farming and winemaking traditions of the Ston region, dating back to the Republic of Ragusa (Dubrovnik). The environment has completely resisted mass development, elegantly preserving the old, authentic "captains' haven" spirit of Adriatic yachting.

Practical Info

There are no independent marina facilities (no fuel station or waste disposal) inside the bay; however, you can utilize the modern floating pontoons with water and electricity provided by the restaurants. Mooring is usually complimentary for yachts dining at the establishments, but due to limited spaces, booking a dinner and berth well in advance is mandatory during peak season. There are no grocery shops. For major provisioning and fuel, Slano or Dubrovnik marinas are the closest practical solutions. Its wave-free waters are highly comfortable for families.

Personal Insight

Captain's Note

“
"Sailing in from the open waters around Korčula or Mljet and gliding into the mirror-like calm of Kobaš is one of the most rewarding moments in the Adriatic. After securing your yacht at Gastro Mare’s jetty in the late afternoon, tasting Chef Ante’s magnificent lobster pasta and Ston oysters paired with local Pelješac wines is a priceless luxury. Just monitor your charts and depth sounder second by second to clear the shallows at the channel entrance."
