Mljet

Mljet is one of the most sheltered and popular stops in Croatia. The three primary nautical hubs are Polače, Pomena, and Sobra. Polače, located within the National Park, is a massive, lake-like bay with a muddy bottom that offers flawless anchoring. Pomena is the closest entry point to the lakes and is famous for its restaurant piers. While prevailing winds are northwesterly, these bays provide excellent shelter. Navigators should be aware of the small islets at the bay entrances and the National Park entry fees, which are usually collected directly from your yacht.

Social life in Mljet is about peaceful dinners in nature rather than loud clubs. Restaurants in Pomena and Polače often offer free mooring, water, and electricity in exchange for dining at their establishment. Must-try specialties include "Mljet Makaruli" (local pasta), goat cheese, and fresh Adriatic lobster. Local wines enjoyed in the silence of the forest reflect the island's sophisticated and calm spirit.

The two saltwater lakes (Veliko and Malo Jezero) in the Mljet National Park are essential visits. The 12th-century St. Mary’s Monastery, located on an islet in the middle of the large lake, is a gem accessible only by small boat. Also, the "Odysseus Cave" (Odisejeva špilja), where the legend says the hero took refuge, is mesmerizing for snorkelers due to the neon blue light reflecting through the water.

Mljet is the most forested island in the Adriatic (70% green). The ruins of a massive Roman Palace in Polače demonstrate its deep historical roots. The nature is entirely untouched, with pine forests reaching down to the water. The cultural fabric is mystical, ranging from Roman heritage to the silence of medieval monks.

Small markets are available in Polače and Pomena for basic needs. Fuel is available in Sobra. National Park tickets also cover boat trips on the lakes. Renting a bike is the best way to explore the lake areas. Its calm waters and secure harbors make it one of the most comfortable stops in the Adriatic for families.
