Kythnos

Kythnos offers numerous safe anchoring and mooring options for sailors. The island's main port is Merichas on the west coast, providing stern-to mooring along the town quay with water and electricity. However, the ultimate nautical gem is Kolona Bay in the northwest, a double-sided beach split by a thin strip of sand that remains as calm as a pool during strong Meltemi winds, offering flawless holding on a sandy bottom. Loutra on the eastern coast features a small marina where natural thermal springs flow directly into the sea. Navigators should be mindful of increased wave heights around the headlands when the north winds pick up.

Social life in Kythnos reflects the bright yet serene soul of the Cyclades. Evenings come alive in the tavernas of Merichas harbor or within the narrow alleys of the fairytale capital, Chora, perched on the hills. The cuisine is deeply local and organic, featuring signature dishes like the island's famous "Xyno" sour cheese, "Sfougato" (fried cheese balls), and fresh local goat meat. The waterfront tavernas in Loutra are highly popular among sailors, offering an authentic setting to enjoy ouzo and local delicacies by the sea.

The island’s undisputed highlight is walking along the unique sandbar of Kolona Bay and enjoying the sea on both sides simultaneously. For a natural wellness break, soaking in the natural rock pools of Loutra, where ancient thermal hot springs meet the sea, is a matchless experience. On land, exploring the massive Katafiki Cave in Driopida village—one of the largest underground caves in Greece—and wandering through Chora's whitewashed alleys are top excursions.

Kythnos features a typical Cycladic landscape that is dry, windy, and lined with traditional dry-stone walls (xerolithies). The island's name stems from the ancient Greek word meaning "to hide," and despite its raw appearance, it conceals a deeply serene nature. The cultural fabric displays beautifully preserved Cycladic architecture with whitewashed cube houses, old windmills, and blue-domed churches. The locals' traditional ceramic craftsmanship and agricultural heritage remain highly vibrant today.

Water and electricity are available on the quays in both Merichas and Loutra; however, arriving early in the afternoon is recommended during peak season to secure a spot in Loutra marina or an anchorage in Kolona Bay. Supermarkets, bakeries, and car rental services are readily available around Merichas harbor. Being located just 25 miles from Athens (Lavrion port) makes it one of the most practical, safe, and comfortable provisioning stops for sailors entering or exiting the Cyclades.
