Papanikolis Cave

Papanikolis Cave, located on the southwest coast of Meganissi, is one of the largest and most spectacular sea caves in the world. Famous for being the secret hideout of the Greek submarine "Papanikolis" during World War II, it is a legendary stop for any premium yacht charter. A blue cruise to this site allows sailors to enter the vast cavern, where exceptional sea quality and vibrant turquoise waters create a magical interior environment. The coastal structure features towering limestone cliffs that open into a massive entrance, large enough for small boats and dinghies to navigate inside. The cave’s interior beach and the stunning play of light reflecting off the ceiling make it a top destination for snorkeling and exploring the raw maritime wonders of the Ionian Sea.

Logistics & Technical

Located on the southwestern tip of Meganisi island, near Lefkada, Papanikolis is one of the largest sea caves in the world. It is not a port but a spectacular daytime anchorage point. The entrance is vast—about 120 meters long—allowing even medium-sized yachts to sail inside. The depth reaches up to 30 meters within the cave, providing ample room for maneuvering. However, anchoring inside is prohibited and technically difficult due to the rocky bottom. Most skippers anchor in the sandy patches just outside the entrance and enter via dinghy or by swimming. It is best visited in calm weather, as westerly swells can make the entrance choppy.

Being a natural site, there are no facilities or restaurants within the cave. Social life is centered on your own deck, enjoying the majestic view of the limestone ceilings. For dining and provisioning, sailors head to the nearby villages of Vathi or Spartochori on Meganisi, which are famous for their authentic Ionian tavernas and fresh seafood.
