Mandraki

Mandraki, the ancient harbor area of Rhodes and Kos, has been the center of Mediterranean maritime trade throughout history. Mandraki Harbor in Rhodes is famous for the iconic deer statues at its entrance and the medieval windmills; it is also the site where the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, once stood. For yacht charter guests, it offers the opportunity to stay in the heart of the city, right under the shadow of historic walls. On blue cruise itineraries, it is the most prestigious stop for both cultural exploration and access to vibrant city life. You can crown your day with fresh seafood and Greek delicacies at the elegant cafes and local tavernas along the waterfront.

Logistics & Technical

Mandraki is a historic and highly crowded town harbor located on the northeastern tip of Rhodes. Technically, it requires yachts to drop their own anchor and moor stern-to the town quay, as there are no laid moorings (lazy lines). The seabed is mostly sand and mud, offering good holding; however, the harbor floor is cluttered with old chains and debris, posing a high risk of fouled anchors, so using an anchor trip line is recommended. While well-protected from the northerly Meltemi by the medieval walls, strong easterly and southeasterly winds can cause a heavy swell inside. Customs and port police offices are conveniently located right behind the quay.

Mandraki harbor sits at the crossroads of Rhodes' vibrant modern city and its ancient past. The moment you step off your yacht, you find yourself at the gates of the medieval Old Town. The culinary options are endless, ranging from upscale international restaurants to traditional tavernas tucked away in cobbled alleys. Local specialties like "pitaroudia" (chickpea fritters), fresh seafood, and Rhodes wines are highlights. Social life is active around the clock, with harbor-front cafes, sunset cocktails on the fortress walls, and a bustling nightlife.

The primary activity is exploring the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Medieval City of Rhodes and the Palace of the Grand Master. At the harbor entrance, photographing the deer statues atop the twin pillars—where the Colossus is said to have stood—and the historic St. Nicholas Fortress is a must. Culture & Nature

Mandraki represents a massive cultural mosaic where Ancient Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Knights of St. John, Ottoman, and Italian architectures intertwine. The neoclassical Italian buildings and the three historic windmills along the pier complete this unique aesthetic. The surrounding nature carries the typical warm, sunny character of the Mediterranean; right outside the harbor, Elli Beach offers crystal-clear waters for a quick swim.

Practical Info

Being a town harbor, water and electricity are available on the quay, though finding a port official during peak season might require some patience. Large supermarkets, bakeries, banks, and chandleries are all within walking distance on the streets right behind the port. Refueling is easily arranged via mini-tankers on the quay. As it is an official port of entry, clearing customs and handling transit logs through local agents is very straightforward.

Personal Insight

Captain's Note

“
"Entering Mandraki harbor is like passing through one of the grandest gates of maritime history. As you glide between the two deer statues, the imposing walls on your bow will mesmerize you. However, do not rush when dropping anchor; to avoid fouling on old chains on the harbor floor, ensure you drop it on a clear sandy patch and pay out the chain with control."
