Levitha

Tucked away between Leros and Amorgos, Levitha is a hidden sanctuary for yacht charter enthusiasts seeking ultimate tranquility. This small, remote island is famous among sailors for its deep, naturally protected bays and exceptionally clear turquoise waters. Ideal for a serene stop during a blue cruise, it offers a raw and untouched landscape far from the tourist crowds. The island is inhabited by a single family who runs a traditional waterfront restaurant, providing sailors with authentic local flavors in a unique, rustic setting. It is the perfect destination for those looking to reconnect with nature under the Aegean stars.

Logistics & Technical

Levitha is a vital strategic haven for sailors, especially during the long open-sea passages between Leros and Amorgos. The main bay on the southern side curves deeply inland like a snake, completely blocking out the wind. Inside the bay, there are paid mooring buoys managed by the single local family living on the island, keeping your yacht secure like in a swimming pool even during heavy Meltemi. The seabed is a mix of sand and seagrass; if you prefer to anchor instead of using a buoy, ensure it is well-set. The bay offers 100% protection from strong northerly and westerly winds. Navigational entry is wide, but you must be careful with the narrowing inside.

Gastronomy & Social Life

Only one single family (the Kamposos family) lives on the island, and the entire social scene revolves around their rustic, tiny family taverna located up the hill in an old stone house. After securing your yacht, you hike up a dirt path to reach the taverna. The cuisine is fully organic and local; featuring slow-cooked goat meat from their own livestock, island-made cheeses, and whatever fresh fish was caught that morning. Dining by candlelight after the generator is turned off at night is one of the most authentic and exclusive social experiences at sea.

Activities & Exploration

The best activity on Levitha is hiking along the raw paths stretching from the bay up to the taverna and the island's high points. At the island's peak, you can explore the historic ruins of a World War II German lookout post; looking out at the horizon from here and feeling the absolute isolation in the middle of the Aegean is magical. On the water, snorkeling in the crystal-clear, untouched entrance of the bay is highly relaxing.

Culture & Nature

Levitha features a raw Aegean landscape characterized by wild brush, brown rocky hills, and persistent winds. Culturally, the island's greatest asset is the Kamposos family themselves, who have lived here for generations, acting as both keepers of the land and the lighthouse. By running a farm and fishing under harsh conditions, this family single-handedly keeps the ancient, isolated island culture alive today.

Practical Info

There are absolutely no logistical facilities (no electricity, water, internet, shops, or fuel) on the island. Visiting here is a true test of self-sufficiency; ensure your yacht's tanks and provisions are completely full. If you plan to dine at the taverna, it is a polite local custom to inform the family beforehand via VHF or when you arrive at the buoys. It is the most cult stop in the Aegean for experienced sailors looking for absolute silence under the stars.

Personal Insight

Captain's Note

“
"Levitha is a priceless oasis where you secure your lines and take a deep breath after a tiring passage in the middle of the Aegean. Walking ashore in the late afternoon toward the stone house, the island's timeless emptiness will touch your soul. Dining by candlelight at night, you will be amazed by the brilliance of the stars and this purest, most untouched form of Mediterranean yachting."
