Astypalaia Island

Known as the "Butterfly of the Aegean" due to its unique shape, Astypalaia is a premier destination for yacht charter enthusiasts seeking authenticity and serenity. This island marks the transition between the Dodecanese and the Cyclades, offering a stunning mix of whitewashed architecture and deep blue waters. Its well-protected harbors and secluded emerald bays provide ideal conditions for a blue cruise adventure. Sailors can explore the iconic Venetian castle perched on the hill and traditional windmills. The waterfront restaurants serve world-class local seafood and artisanal island products, ensuring a sophisticated yet rustic Aegean experience for every maritime traveler.

Logistics & Technical

Astypalaia offers excellent natural shelter. The main port, Pera Gialos, provides water and electricity, while the deep bay of Vathi is a legendary "lake-like" refuge during strong Meltemi winds. For those who prefer anchoring, the coves of Maltezana (Analipsi) and the nearby islet of Kounoupi offer sandy bottoms with great holding. Navigation requires care around the small islets and rocks scattered around its "butterfly wings."

Gastronomy & Social Life

The island’s cuisine is famous for its local saffron (krokos), collected from the mountains. You must taste Kitrinokouloura (yellow saffron cookies) and Poungia (cheese pies with honey). The social life is centered in the Chora, where cozy bars and traditional tavernas serve fresh seafood and local goat dishes like Lamprianos. Nightlife is atmospheric and sophisticated, focusing on moonlit cocktails in bars overlooking the castle.

Activities & Exploration

Astypalaia is a paradise for "alternative" travelers. The climbing field of Ftera offers 20 routes on excellent limestone with sea views. Hiking trails connect the Chora to remote chapels and caves like the Cave of the Dragon. For sailors, the "island hopping" within the island—to the islets of Koutsomiti and Kounoupi—is a must for the most transparent turquoise waters you’ll ever find.

Culture & Nature

The Querini Castle is the heart of the island’s history, standing since the 13th century. Astypalaia was known to the ancients as the "Table of the Gods" because of its flowers and fruits. Today, it is also a pioneer in sustainability as a "smart and sustainable island." The culture is a unique blend of Venetian architecture and traditional Aegean hospitality, with 365 chapels dotting its hills.

Practical Info

Provisioning is best done in Pera Gialos or the Chora, where you can find high-quality local honey, cheese, and saffron. The island has a good medical center and several pharmacies. For yacht guests, the local community is exceptionally helpful, and bike rentals are a popular way to explore the interior. It is very safe and family-friendly, especially in the shallower bays like Livadi.
